Ancient Mirror

  • Requires: ✦✧ Intellect
  • Origins:  Zordin
  • Start with:   Eye in the Sky

You possess a small, cracked, cloudy mirror in a dinky plastic frame. The mirror reforms if broken and can’t be lost. Even if you leave the mirror behind, it soon reappears amidst your belongings.

You have come to understand this small mirror is a part of a being—the Ancient Mirror—who dwells above the heavens. When you look into your small mirror and ask it questions, the larger Mirror above responds with moving images of astounding clarity and insight.

The Mirror does not identify itself as a god, but rather as a powerful entity (or collection of entities) from the time of the Shattered Planet who survived the apocalypse by remaining “between the lost moons.”

The Mirror’s presence is occluded by the cyclone of Tel-Kanan, by the magic-laced civilization of Mazr, and by the depths of old Shinar. However, some of those who’ve dwelled in the chaos beyond—Zordin and Wanderers—can learn how to sense the Mirror, if they’re willing to see.

The being imparts to you an instinctive understanding of light and forces, which unlocks the Sorcerer calling. Additionally:

You start with the following ability:

Eye in the Sky

✦✧ Intellect  As a rest activity, roll Compel to commune with the Mirror and ask it questions.5+:  Gain +1 overflow Awareness, and you can ask the Mirror a number of questions equal to your Intellect. The Guide answers each question by describing an image (see below) that you see in your mirror.  3–4: You can ask the Mirror a single question, which it answers as above. 1–2:  You end your rest with -1 spirit. If your max Spirit is zero, you can't perform this activity. The Mirror orbits the Skysea and can easily show real-time images of anything visible above the clouds that isn’t obscured by solid walls or rock. Thus, the Mirror answers “where” questions most directly. For example, asking the Mirror “Where is the Mazrian skyreme that attacked us?” would cause your small mirror to display a moving  image of the skyreme in question, zooming in slowly from above. Asking the Mirror “Where is the entrance to the rebel base,” if the base is hidden underground, might cause the small mirror to show the top of a house that holds a hidden tunnel entrance. The Mirror also has a memory and shows past events it’s witnessed in fuzzy grayscale. Asking the Mirror “who” or “what” questions may cause it to conjure such images from its past memories. The Mirror can also speculate on future events, showing fleeting, supersaturated images of things to come. Finally, the Mirror shows a plain light background to mean “yes,” a black background to mean “no,” and a gray background to mean “unclear.”  The Mirror knows a great deal, senses the intent behind your questions, and answers as truthfully as it can—always with images, never words. However, the Mirror is not omniscient, and you’re not even close to certain that it’s sane.
