HEROES    LORE

Skyremes

Riding    The Cloak

  • Requires: Agility
  • Origins:  Kananite, Mazrian
  • Start with:   Skysea Legs, a skyreme skiff (also requires Navigation lore)

You’re at home on the deck of a skyreme. You can fearlessly clamber up rigging or hang off the edge of a hull. You also know the basic functions of a skyreme’s components (though not how to Navigate a vessel).

You start with the following ability:

Skysea Legs

Agility  While you're on a skyreme, you can take -1 awareness and gain a +2 bonus to any Maneuver action. You must declare this ability before you roll.

How Skyremes Work

A skyreme is a wooden vessel with three sets of sails. The dorsal sails attach to one or more masts that rise from the ship’s deck. Two sets of side sails— port and starboard—extend from oars on either side of the hull, resembling the fins of a fish or the wings of a bird.

This lore grants knowledge of just about everything to do with a skyreme—except how to navigate it. You (or another character) need the Navigation lore to actually sail the ship across the Skysea with any chance of reaching your destination.

Skysailing

While balloons are largely confined to the motion of windcurrents, skyremes can freely roam the Skysea. By controlling the motion and angle of these sails, a skyreme’s captain can maneuver the vessel in any direction. A skyreme can also dive and swoop by converting its altitude into lateral motion.

The sidesails oscillate in a pattern that resonates with the Rephaim in the windcurrents, “catching” it. Most modern skyremes rely on dark magic crystals embedded in the oars; however, these crystals must be recharged. In the absence of charged crystals, a crew can row the oars.

Skyreme Skiff

If you or another hero also know the Navigation lore, you start with a skyreme skiff, a small ship with Toughness 4, Structure 64, a single mast, 6 oars, and space for about 20 occupants and their cargo. Its weather deck has canopies fore and aft to protect against rain. Below, a cramped main deck doubles as a cargo hold.

In a good windcurrent, the vessel can stay afloat with only two oars actively being rowed or powered by dark magic.

For each oar powered by a dark crystal, roll a d4 after a day of skysailing. On a 1, the oar's crystal loses its charge.
